USAID Opportunities to Learn (OTL) in Nigeria

IDP is partnering with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and other consortium members, including Plan International, Restoration of Hope Initiative (ROHI), and American University of Nigeria (AUN), to implement USAID’s Opportunities to Learn (OTL) project in northeastern Nigeria. OTL supports the immediate education needs of out of school children and youth in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states through safer new and existing non-formal education. The project’s goal is to ensure that out of school children and youth in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states are safely able to gain foundational skills, including literacy, numeracy, and social and emotional skills, in order to progress to higher levels of education, training and/or engagement in the workforce.

Project Highlights

  • Developed technical guidance on issues such as inclusive infrastructure and accessibility, inclusive budgeting, best practices on administering the Washington Group Questions, and other topics for use by OTL partners
  • Supported the development of teacher training modules and government and community capacity building plans that are reflective of principles of UDL and inclusive education
  • Provided technical assistance to review assessment data related to children with disabilities
  • Engaging with Organizations of Persons with Disabilities and other community organizations, including youth advocacy networks, to promote the inclusion of children with disabilities in non-formal education
  • Identifying learners who need to be screened for possible disabilities and provided with appropriate assistive technologies such as wheelchairs, hearing aids, or glasses.
