The Pacific Islands:
Situational Analysis

Donor: UNICEF
Timeframe: May 2025-January 2026

The goal of this project is to develop eight situational analyses to identify gaps and provide actionable recommendations to enhance polices, plans, programs, services, and budgets so the respective countries can meet the obligations of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and advance disability-inclusive Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Focusing on the Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshal Islands, Nauru, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu, the study will inform key national partners, such as governments, OPDs, NGOs, donors such as the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), UN agencies, and civil society actors. The study will consider people with disabilities of all ages, genders, disability types, and geographic locations, with particular attention to intersectionality.

Collaborating with the Pacific Disability Forum (PDF) and local researchers, the study will collect information related to policies, attitudes, accessibility, climate change, humanitarian response, identification, education, employment, health, social protection, data collection and monitoring, and OPD participation.

Project Highlights

  • A comprehensive desk review of existing literature, policies, reports, and data related to disability rights.
  • Primary data collection using mixed methods approaches with key implementers, government actors, OPDs, NGOs, and others.
  • Hold validation meetings to verify findings and recommendations
  • Develop proposals for future UNPRPD funding in Kiribati and Vanuatu.
